If you're looking for a lawyer at the last second you take what you can get and it's not like you need a harvard grad to say "we will pay the full amount within a week" and facilitate a wire transfer.
As far as the IRS goes, I don't see why that's a problem for the SFWA. They've doled out money for legal expenses to protect pedophiles with no problems, which has nothing to do with advancing the interests of scifi writers at all. Who knows what kind of fucky shit was going on with the money they gave pat, but unless it was officially a loan he never intends to pay back and it just stays on the books as an unpaid and unpursued debt. Even then that's probably a bigger problem for pat and niki because I'm sure that retard would think he doesn't have to claim it as income.
