Deep Throat

The other day my 12 year old stepson remarked that his sister was "deep throating" the taco she was eating....................................................I told him I'd never seen that movie, so I don't get the reference. My wife asked me if it's a real movie. I said "yeah, it was shown in theaters." She asked who was in it. I didn't know the actors/actresses. Then there was a whole discussion on whether or not porn was ever shown in theaters. Pee Wee Herman was mentioned by me. The kids didn't know how that related to the conversation. I didn't explain.

Anyway, show 'em Deep Throat.

Of course these things are all a matter of opinion/taste or whatever. My sons aren't that old yet, but I'd definitely have less of a problem with them seeing tits in a movie (not porn, just R rated) than OTT gory violence at 12. It sounds pretty arbitrary, but just a couple of years later - 14 yo - I wouldn't care so much. Obviously it depends on the kid. Total Recall is pretty cartoony, but the scene in Robocop where Murphy gets blown away is pretty graphic, almost pornographic violence. Apocalypto is one of my favorite movies, but again I wouldn't show it to my 12 yo, women and kids being killed, decapitations etc. When he's 14 or 15? Probably. I'm sure it sounds random and retarded but hey

I rewatched Robocop for myself not too long ago, it’s just on the other side of the line from what I’d show him.

Apocalyptico is a fucking great movie but I would need to skim through it first because I remember some of the violence making me uneasy as an adult.

So I’m with you on this McGowan, but those are both movies I will definitely make him see at some point.

I think this is safe for a twelve year old - if he can appreciate horror with some intelligence, I wholeheartedly recommend Cat People, The 7th Victim, and The Leopard Man. Those are the best starters of the Val Lewton Cycle, excellent pacing with great dialogue and visuals. If he enjoys them, the three Karloff ones are essential: Isle of the Dead, Body Snatcher and Bedlam. ESPECIALLY Body Snatcher.

If he doesn't like them and finds them too slow, well, then your kid is a hopeless cunt (no offense).

Hot Shots Part Deux
Rumble in the Bronx
Ferris Beuler's Day Off
Jurassic Park
South Park: Bigger Longer and Uncut
The Goonies
Inception

Don't sit on the first Hot Shots, either. One of the best movies to take the piss out of Top Gun and every military-fellating film.

Rumble in the Bronx though? Chan has had much better films than that. I think City Hunter would be better for a kid due to how silly and stupid it is, but you'd have to watch the subtitled Cantonese version for the better dialogue (there's nothing in the English dubs that comes close to "I hope you get AIDS!")

Rumble is a good intro due to it being "American" even though it was filmed in Canada. It's also just campy and fun.

I still really like the first Police Story. That scene were the three guys get thrown from the bus is crazy.

I gotta check out City Hunter.

If he's not too scared, I'd show him Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer. Scream especially would blow his mind. I think that age is pretty perfect for watching slashers because if you're older you start to go through all the suspects in your head but at that age any reveal is insane. Urban Legends and Final Destination too.
