I don’t get what there even is to settle in this case? Drop the subpoena and the lawyer fees stop racking up, that’s all there is to it. Why would Quasi accept less than full reimbursement for his fees? As far as I know he’s not going for anything more than just getting his costs covered, which he is entitled to by law.

the case is already over so what even is the point of the subpoena?
I think technically Quasi only gets paid if he successfully quashes, which we know he will but it's not "guaranteed", so whoever Pat's current lawyer is trying to play that hand even though they have zero leverage. Quasi should 100% tell them to fuck awff and take the $50,000 judgement

I've tried every permutation I can think of including the lawyer's name. Our best bet might be to call the clerk's office and say we're an independent journalist requesting to observe the hearing.

Because they aren’t part of the suit. Giving someone money doesn’t make you liable for what they do. It’s still Rick’s case, not theirs.
I'd argue they are - they're funding it, and Pat's had to waive client-attorney privilege to get them to do so, and I believe they have a certain amount of say over the case as a result.

Besides, the whole point of anti-slapp legislation is to stop people like the SFWA harassing innocent board ops with frivolous lawsuits. If they get a pass, and Quasi can't recover his money, then the legislation is useless.

Just a thought.

Did Gawker sue that guy who funded Hulks suit? Feels like the same precedence would apply
Gawker went bankrupt, so it's a moot point.

This sounds plausible. I'm not a lawyer (like, really not a lawyer) but if that were not the case it seems like any large organization that wanted to bully someone could just get a fat unemployed front man to sue and effectively eliminate any downside.

The opposing counsel doesn't seek crazy damages bc the defendant doesnt have deep pockets and if there are any damages good luck getting them because the defendant is broke and fat and sleeps on his couch

It would be interesting to see how Pat/the SFWA tried to hide the funding. Pat appears to be a semi-professional scammer of the federal government. I wonder if the SFWA was like "here's the money" and completely left out any potential tax implications. Or did Resto bill the SFWA directly? That would be catching them red-handed and opens them up to collections I would bet.

I just can't see this cast of freaks that runs the SFWA being smart enough to comply with federal tax laws. They are Milhouses in spite of the fact they call themselves nerds. They aren't nerds, Bart. Nerds are smart.

Thank you. The same law bullshit that allows SFWA to fight a proxy war via frivolous lawsuits also allows us to remain in the shadows making their life a living hell.

Recognize the game is rigged and makes your moves accordingly. But do have fun!
Throwing a water balloon filled with $1 worth of paint can damage a judge as much as a 150k dollar lawsuit. Please, do have fun.

I have nothing but love for El Pitudo Peña but I’m really looking forward to seeing Stavros Esq 😂🤣😂🤣

Not to be a downer, but I don't think that's likely. There was no response filed to the initial quash, the update in January, or the most recent filing. Unless the court is more than a week behind (which is possible) this would be ex parte. Rick would be paying the dmv attorney to show up, say they didn't file a response after 11 months, that they withdrew the underlying complaint, and already lost in SF..and then hope for an extension.

I would assume a default judgement on the 6th.
