Why do atheists celebrate Christmas? Why do they get married, have funerals in churches etc?

I genuinely don’t get it. I’m not gonna sperg about it to my family where I am now.

But they seem to worship Santa Claus, a toy commercial created by Coca Cola - and they play Taylor Swift Christmas songs and think traditional ones are “morbid” and “old fashioned” and they just generally glorify commercialism to the full extent.

So many people are like this now, why?

Why would you want to get married, a Christian principle, in the eyes of a God you don’t worship? Or be laid to rest in His Churches?

I’m not against having a good time, drinking and eating and playing - but isn’t that how these types live full time anyway?

I don't know a single person that celebrates Christmas for religious reasons.

It doesn't even have anything to do with Christianity. Not today, not 2000 years ago.

Always been a pagan holiday, modern tradition is primarily German Pagan Yule and in the early days the Roman Saturnalia.

That doesn’t mean it started as one, or that it’s all it is. But thats what it turns into. It’s like asking why atheists celebrate Easter.

Better question, why do some anti-Pagan religious people celebrate Halloween? It’s the same answer.

I’m not trying to insult you but do you have any concept that these things evolve outside their original purpose? Yes, marriage started as a Christian tradition. It has now evolved to a product of the state. People aren’t getting married thinking of god, they’re getting married to have equal rights, or for tax / property purposes, or for visitation / will rights.

Thats not because we live in a society of godless heathen atheists. It’s because society has molded these things to be divorced from their original religious intent.

I firmly believe there should be two tiers of marriage now, they act the same legally but one is for actual Christian’s and it adheres to the true form, between men and women only, with obedience expected and divorce not considered - with the traditions and churches etc, and another for modern people where they can marry whatever thing they like, divorce whenever they want and nothing is expected from them or their behaviour - but they don’t demand to be recognised by the Church, they can do it elsewhere and do whatever they want.

This is the only rational way but it won’t happen because of course they’d simply demand to pollute the real thing anyway, despite it being the same legally.

I was the same once. Then I was gnostic, and I also had periods of reading philosophy and new age stuff around Buddhism and aliens. It’s all very tempting stuff, but that’s the point. Satan is much more intelligent than us, and he can tempt us in many, many ways - to the point we believe we’re doing good and being good people.

It’s all that is, it doesn’t make him a bad person, just wrong.

(I think) what you’re talking about exists but is less strict. Sure, if I go get married there is nothing legally binding me from not getting a divorce, or only marrying a woman. But think about this if i were a Christian:

Getting married under law would’t be enough. I would go to a church and get it officiated in eyes of god

My union is the one that matters most. If i’m marrying a woman i’m not doing anything wrong

And if I believe in my union I don’t need laws barring me from a divorce, i’ll trust that me and my wife are godly enough not to do that.

I mean what you’re describing did also exist but it become obsolete for obvious reasons. Marriage was seen as the Christian ideal and if you weren’t a Christian, or marrying under their laws, you’d have to get a civil union. It provided you with mostly the same rights but was only recognized by the state that officiated it rather than federally. Again, even in a scenario where we had two different forms of marriage it became obsolete due to the state. Getting married didn’t just officiate you in the eyes of god but gave you rights through the state that you wouldn’t get under civil unions - Hence why gay marriage was legalized.

It’s just a vvuuurrry complicated situation.

It isn’t complicated at all, it’s very clear what marriage is and if you want to go against it and think it’s wrong, you are wrong about marriage and you shouldn’t want to do it anyway.

It’s like if you went to a strip club and started demanding they make all the strippers men, you’re in the wrong place, go elsewhere.
