I watched this for the first time this year and it's easily in my top 3 Coen movies now. It's like a live action Looney Tunes cartoon. The police chase scene has me fawkin howling.
I constantly find myself yodeling the music from that very scene.

I've been playing a lot of DayZ lately, so the newest movie that I watched was a bootleg of the newest Spider-Man. It was actually pretty cool, I like that they had all three of the Spider-Man actors in it.

The actual last movie I watched was Rumble in the Bronx.

Watched Hard Eight aka Sydney. Wasn't sure what to expect since it was PTAs first movie but much like the Coens he came right of the gate with talent. Great movie and cast. John C Reilly and the book guy from that Seinfeld episode were perfect.

I just watched that for the first time a couple of months ago and didn't know what to expect (although I love John C Reilly when he's not acting like a retard in a movie with Will Ferrell) it was pretty good.

I think he's the one "pretentious" director that I actually like. I can't stand any Charlie Kaufman movies, Wes Anderson is DOGSHIT, David Fincher sucks (with the exception of se7en and fight club) and drugstore cowboy was the only good Gus Van Sant movie.

Don't get me wrong I'm not into strictly popcorn blockbusters or anything, I just don't care about directors that everybody says we should care about because they're so genius. I hate method actors too. Daniel Day-Lewis has to stay in character all day and be a dick to people on set... Why? Because he can't play make believe as good as we did when we were all five? What a chore it must be to be around that handjob.

The last movie I went and saw in a theater was Dunkirk. I wish The Godfather would have been shown in more than just AMC Theaters for the anniversary. I'd have definitely gone to that. Wrath of Khan and In the Heat of the Night are going to be shown for their release anniversaries in a couple of the theaters near me in late Summer. No way I'm missing the chance to see either of those on a big screen.

If you like those Fincher movies watch The Game. I think Fincher is extremely overrated but really enjoyed that one. I wouldn't call PTA pretentious at all but I'm an arthouse fag so I'm not sure what civilians see when they watch his stuff :image_9248:

I'm actually a pretty big Fincher fan. Enjoyed everything he's done aside from Mank which was an inaccurate snoozefest.

Really liked The Game although I wasn't a fan of the end.

I mean to the casual moviegoer his movies are considered pretty pretentious, especially after There Will be Blood and The Master (but I actually thought both of those movies were PFG)

You liked Alien 3, Benjamin Button and The Social Network?

Not knocking you if you did like those movies, I'm just giving you reasons why I don't like his movies.

I actually forgot he directed Alien 3. I take it back, that was worse than Mank.

I enjoyed The Social Network. It's the kind of movie that would've been shit in the hands of another director, but Fincher managed to present it in a way that made the story interesting at least to me. Also love how it wasn't afraid to make Zuckerberg look like the shitbag he is.

Benjamin Button I remember enjoying even though it was way too long, but it' been years since I've seen it.

I never saw Mank but heard of it being based on shit that was proven false years ago. Seemed like a movie Hollywood would jack off over. Not saying all movies about hollywood are shit but the ones THEY praise usually are.

PTA is hit or miss for me, but I loved both There Will be Blood and The Master. Boogie Nights is probably my favorite film he's done though. Magnolia and Punch Drunk Love were pretty good too.

I didn't like Inherent Vice or Licorice Pizza. Phantom Thread bored me to tears.

I'm still holed up here, so my woman got her pick of what to watch earlier. She picked Marjorie Morningstar.

It's a drama with a young Natalie Wood (age.) and Gene Kelly. Always seems odd watching Gene not singing and dancing, but he's pretty good. Still your usual treacle of fifties Hollywood, but it's alright.

I'd have rather watched "The Spiral Staircase" instead, but it was her turn. At least it wasn't "Driftwood".

The Spiral Staircase was pretty good I should do research and see if there is a better print since mine is from the bargain bin at Big Lots ages ago. Interesting premise for a thriller that I'm shocked hasn't been remade or maybe it has and I just never bothered to look.

It's exactly a Hollywood jerk off movie made for the academy and nobody else. What was odd is that it was sold on being mostly about him writing Citizen Kane when that's only a small part of the movie. Instead it's mostly about him just being a drunk and for some reason focusing a bunch on the gubernatorial election in California during that year. What really annoyed me is that Mank is presented to be a socialist when in fact in real life he was actually a outspoken conservative in Hollywood. It's such a bullshit lie to put on a film when it's such easy history to look up and was just another attempt by Hollywood to push a left wing agenda. Focusing so much on that and lying about his politics really made me hate it. But even that aside, it's just a boring film that doesn't focus on the actual interesting aspects of his life.

The funny thing is the script was actually written by Fincher's father in the 90's and he died in the early 2000's before it even got made. I don't know how much editing they did to his script before making it, but It's easy to see why it never went into production and I think the only reason Fincher even made it was a tribute to his father. The only good thing I can say about it is they did do a great job of capturing the look and feel of a movie from that area, but I actually paid to go see it in a theater before it came on Netflix when it came out and nearly walked out I was so bored and annoyed by it.

I imported a Blu Ray from Kino Lorber that's licensed and very, very good. I recommend it.
