Let's say they have 1250 attendees, let's say about half are local to the Detroit area, so 650 need accommodations. Couples, buddies and coworkers share rooms, so let's say on average each room houses 1.5 people (probably more, people seldom travel alone to this sort of events), that gives you demand for ~433 rooms-worth total.

Minus the people who stay at AirBnBs, family/friend's place, sleep in the car, or go to the Con for a single day so don't need accommodation. 150 rooms is a BIG fraction of their entire con.

"Please share the conference details with your network. Attendance is down and we need all the help we can get! We've got plenty of open rooms at a heavily discounted convention rate!"

I still don’t get how they did it. I’ve managed conferences before at work and I’ve never set it up in a way that we would owe money if the room block wasn’t full. And i especially wouldn’t do that if my company didn’t have enough money to pay for it if the worse case happened.
