I'm originally Canadian and I can't fault you there. Don't dismiss it completely, just wait a few years. The only place I still visit is Nova Scotia because there's still something about it. If you want one of the most ruggedly beautiful places try Brier Island around the beginning of October when they have their fake Thanksgiving. The leaves are changing, the weather is cool but mild, and the tourists are gone. From the lodge there's a hiking trail that goes all the way around the island and it'll kick anyone's ass because it's scrambling over granite boulders.
If you want scallops that taste like scallops then Digby is right there.
Fly into Boston and do the 9 or so hour drive and take the ferry to Digby.
There's also some interesting history there with this guy being the first to sail by himself around the world.
