People vote with their wallets. All these evil Chinese/russian oligarchs head straight to the "cucked" western nations to spend their ill-gotten money as soon as it hits their bank account. "Based on gold" my ass. These are all totalitarian regimes that freeze the assets of anyone who speaks a word of dissent. The west has it's problems, but we are still light years ahead of the commies

We have literally frozen the assets of all of those people, and Canada closed the bank accounts of truckers who didn’t want to get killed with clot shots. In the UK they prison you and remove your ability to earn money if you quote crime statistics.

I wouldn’t be so smug.

If you can enlighten us all how you can afford to live like a trust fund woman at a “social media manager” type job then I’m all ears.

I’m comfortable enough but I have very little free time and I’ll often dream about being at my office and doing my work since it feels like it’s all I spend my life doing, but my city is a complete shit hole to what it used to be even 5 years ago and although I make twice as much, I feel poorer.

Yes I know, “just leave bro” - but this trend is inescapable anywhere on a zoomed out time scale.
I've been good at my job for a while and earned good raises, saved money as often as I could, bought a house when prices were low. I drive a pretty basic car, don't splurge on anything (I've got more guitars than I need).

What do you do for a living sir?

I’m happy for you and this is a good thing, but we can’t pretend like it’s at all the normal story for the average person now.

I think it's the story for someone my age who tried at least a little. Sure, some people prioritize nicer cars, more vacations or other silly spending but I always prioritized living debt free.

I do shit in finance, basically.

It’s not normal, I know a few finance bros and they all came from money, and if you said that they’d all get upset and claim “the rich” are always this amorphous class of people who are always conveniently slightly richer than they are, which changes as they accumulate wealth.

The genuine self made wealthy folks I know all built businesses in trades they toiled in like plumbing.

I’m just a middle management IT guy and I don’t spend money on anything because I don’t want anything, I should have a lot more money saved than I do.

Lot of inherited wealth in the finance bro world but thankfully that's not what I do.

I certainly didn't have breaks like that. I had a nearly full ride academic scholarship, graduated early, lucked out a bit on my first job, started saving and investing right away and was just smart about purchases and debt. I remember a friend asking me why I was driving the car I had 15 years ago, it was only like 7 years old and paid off. He, on the other hand, gets a new car like every 4 years. He just always has a car payment.

only a stupid person would put faith in such a flagrantly rigged system
just remember, it's people who usually 'rig' the system who're the winners... & it almost seems like you're assuming the dollar/US system isn't rigged.
Also remember 'democracy' is just one extra claimed choice over dictatorship - & when both sides are being paid-for by the same people, then it doesn't really impress me... but if it makes you feel better, then cool (I guess).

I'm sure it's legit, fine, & fair - just like you were taught in school (by retards btw). I'm not havin' a go, but it is what it is (it's definitely that, LOL).

The history of modern education (& even peer review) 'trust mUh sCienCE, bro' is worthy of it's own thread...

But I just want people to be happy & do well, without subversive influence / propaganda... I see that as lies, & I hate nice people being preoccupied or deceived by politics & the highly paid advertising agencies who influence voters to the point of where they think they're making a free educated choice. They're not.

That's all. Good luck. Now let's have a fun 'culture war', it'll distract from war & deaths & the wealth extraction from normal working people.
Don't get me wrong, I like memes too!

I hate being serious... let's go back to jokes :ROFLMAO:

There’s no question some people’s financial retardation is their own fault, but I’m not like that and I’m not flourishing.

A few years back, my parents died and I got stuck with a massive burden to save the family home. I sold my apartment and lived there for a bit, and despite doubling my salary I couldn’t afford to buy that same apartment back if I wanted to lol.

And even with frugal spending, your head gasket can just explode one day and shit, or a medical emergency and baffling with insurance goons.

Things aren’t great for people.

I work about 25-30 hours a week, which has decreased since covid. I own my house without a mortgage, food costs suck but are still easily affordable. I mostly work from home but gas prices are pretty much where they were 15 years ago. Healthcare is provided by work.

How many paychecks could I miss? I could easily survive 10-15 years. I vacation like 3-4 weeks every year. I've outpaced inflation on my savings every year I've been invested.

I know I've said it before: if you're worse off now than you were 4 years ago, or 10 or 20, that's a problem with you, not the system, regardless of however much it's fallen.
This is the typical "I got mine so who cares about anyone else" smug jerkoff. Meanwhile you work in finance producing absolutely nothing of value to society.

I'm assuming you're a nihilist because no religious scripture in the world advises to only think about yourself and not care about your fellow man. That's incredibly foolish in the long term, especially if you are in a position to help others.

Who is worse off than 4 years ago? Ukrainians that's who. But who cares about them right? There are trillions of dollars of ill-gotten gains at stake.

It sounds like you had something unfortunate happen and it has really harmed your financial situation. As a result, your head is above water but things could be better. That sucks man and honestly the US is not forgiving to people in your position. You’re not going to agree but a robust social safety probably would have done a lot for someone in your position

Socialism doesn’t work and it never has. If you point out why you inevitably end up in “that’s not the socialism I mean” circle.

I would have been better off if I didn’t get taxed to death, it’s mostly about tax implications lol,

The vulnerable and the needy should be taken care of, and if that means inevitably carrying a bunch of lazy bums and liars then it’s a price worth paying. It should not be a beacon and sirens call for the entire world to come and be given welfare, that’s utter insanity.

Ok but the alternative we’re currently living through “doesn’t work” either. Do we really want nobody under the age of 35 ever owning a home? I don’t care about the total GDP of a country if the average people are not benefitting either.

Of course not but socialism causes much starker inequality than anything.

We need simple common sense, and that will never happen because we are ruled by lunatic pedophiles who would rather have complete control over empires of destitute shit than be anonymous in thriving beautiful civilisations.

If you think it’s hard to compete with rich landlords to buy property now (which it is, and is wrong) wait till you need to compete with blackrock for property which is being rented to illegal immigrants backed by government handouts. It’s already happening.
