• My wife nearly got trapped in South Africa during the pandemic. She does the same work that I do (I.T. consulting) and she had a week long gig scheduled at a company in South Africa. She was sweating bullets because she heard all the horror stories about the security situation in the country, and wasn't thrilled to go there, but she doesn't get to choose where the work is. It was literally the week that the pandemic kicked into 5th gear, and it was "up in the air" whether she'd have to go. Eventually, her job canceled the trip. The flight she was scheduled to take, it flew all the way to South Africa, something like twenty hours. Then it landed in SA, sat on the tarmac for a few hours, and turned around. I can't even IMAGINE how miserable it would be, to be stuck on a plane for something like 45 hours continuously. Even worse, if the lockdowns had begun a week later, she may have got "stuck" in Africa. :O
• "Blackhawk Down" made Africa look like a disgusting infernal shithole. Hot, dirty, dusty, grimy, awful. Then one day I pulled up some pictures of where the movie was... and it's really nice.
