WWAW "Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares" being a respectable doc series vs the retarded US version

I LOVE Kitchen Nightmares US as junk TV.

Anyway, the guy that runs this Burger Kitchen is (or was, I think he died) Alan Saffron (don't go by the thumbnail, that's Alan's faggot son). At some point in this episode (it's a two-parter) he hands Gordon his book which is about his father's exploits. His father was (((Abe Saffron))), who in Australia owned hotels and casinos and was all fawken in wit da organized crime; he blackmailed the most prominent politicians, businessmen, police officers etc. in the country according to Alan. I found this out years later because I saw Alan being interviewed in a documentary on organized crime in Australia, and I was like "oh shit that's that nigga from Gordon Ramsay!"

The book is probably interesting; it's called Gentle Satan: Growing up with Australia's Most Notorious Crime Boss and - I didn't know this until I just googled it - they called Abe "The King of King's Cross". King's Cross in Sydney is near where my dad grew up, and he said in the 70s/80s it could be like Sodom and Gomorrah after midnight. It's a great spot for a young man because if you stay at a hotel there, there's no need for transport and you will see more gorgeous women dressed to the nines (in a sexy, slutty way) in five minutes than you would in a month anywhere else. If you can't pick up there, there's something wrong with you.

Shit like this is so retarded it’s fucking hilarious.

That episode was pretty funny. The dweeb owner and his boyfriend who yelled at the staff over nonsense. Gordon hated them so much I think he quit. I think that's also the same episode where the owner thought he had millions of dollars in antiques and paintings so Gordon brought in an appraiser who told him it was worth jack shit. That being said Gordon's UK shows are superior.

I GOT DA HAT NOW!
There was one clip I have never been able to find from Hells Kitchen US where Gordon brings his arm down out of anger and they edited a floating ball of light as if he was spiking it. It make me fawkin howl.

They're two completely different things which can both be enjoyed. The original UK one is obviously quieter and more sincere in some ways. I think Brits are generally less performative than Yanks. A lot of Americans seem to be frustrated actors or performers (Dan, comment?) The US one has the dramatic music and cuts and a lot of the time seems partially scripted. Enjoyable too though sometimes.

I can't remember what the place was called but there was a UK episode with some old guy and his wife who owned a pub. He was a quiet old chap and had some autistic thing where he insisted on serving the food on this old china he'd had for years. Food problems aside, Ramsay told him the plates were gaudy and old-fashioned and he shouldn't use them. The man would quietly agree but, lo and behold, come next service the food would come out on the same old crockery. The conversation would happen again two or three times but the old codger would passive aggressively keep using his old chinaware.

That summed up the difference between the 2 versions for me. In the US one there would have been an over-the-top screaming match followed by the redemption arc and a "I've got to learn to move on" moment at the end. In the UK show he just kept quietly and stubbornly refusing to change until Ramsay had to have all the plates thrown into a skip.

Couple of the UK shows had him go to really good restaurants that were trying to break into the Michelin star band. Some were comically shit but there was a lot of variety. The US version every single fucker was a cartoon buffoon, Ramsay threatens to quit before every ad break (but doesn't), has an argument in a car park and someone drops a plate of food. Amy bakes cakes was the best ever ep though so give them credit for that.

Here's the scene..

Goddam is that funny

I checked out some websites that were all about what happened to these places after Gordon had gone through them. Users would post info; some of them knew what the deal was. This place in particular was 100% a mob front, and that guy's sister mysteriously died a few years later.
