From what I've read, they had an alert system, but it was dependent on text/phone warnings. But all the power and cell service went out, so for some people, the first they knew about it was when they saw the advancing flames. Apparently, most of the dead so far died in their cars while trying to evacuate.
The allegation going around is that there was one single power line or box for that entire area. And it hadn't been maintained properly. The line caught fire, shutting down power to the entire neighborhood, which included phone lines and cell towers as well. And the fire happened during high winds which spread the fire at 70mph. So pretty much worst case scenario. That area was built in a way where any fire would rapidly spread as it was too dense.

This fire will be like that Station Nightclub fire in Rhode Island in 2003. Where 100 people die and another 200 plus are burned severely. But almost no one goes to jail or gets in trouble or admits any wrongdoing. When Bush was President he denied federal aid to the victims of that fire with zero explanation. We'll see how mush brain Biden responds to this. Can't wait to hear about 'global warming' causing this for the next five years as families and survivors argue with the government and insurance companies.

It's unpossible for cars to catch on fire when they're made of steel.

My GF's brother-in-law was in the Station fire. He was working there that night, and barely escaped unscathed. He doesn't talk about it too often.

I hate to ask, but is there any graphic footage from all this?

I remember the wildfire in 2018(?) that destroyed a few towns and some guy was explaining the importance of leaving immediately and showed some skeleton in the driver's seat of a car.

He sounded like a cartoon character, I believe Mr. Mackey, but I could be wrong.

Edit. He sounded like McVicker from Beavis and Butthead

Most read story on the BBC news website right now is locals complaining about tourists still coming. Considering your island depends on it I would welcome the money still coming in but not this lot.

Do Americans feel like Hawaii is really part of America or just a friendly island? The UK has shitty islands dotted around that are or were military bases and other than the argues invading one we rarely think about them as part of us
Yes, Hawaii is one of the 50 states and that's kind of a big deal. This isnt the Philippines we're taking about here. (No offense, Josiah.)
