The official reason is that Putin doesn't want Ukraine to join or collaborate with NATO, and that the current Ukrainian government is persecuting Russains in Ukraine.

the pipeline complicates things, but the invasion started because putin is worried the west is trying to add ukraine into nato. no one in the EU seems to want that, but nobody will explictly say it for whatever reason. that ambiguity (and US meddling in ukraine - see burisma/hunter biden) has pushed putin to invade. ukraine has no strategic importance to the US and the rest of the EU. it's just a buffer zone between nato and russia. it's pointless basically.
