One of my neighbours is a Russian guy of Korean descent. I saw him earlier today and brought it up. He tensed up a bit and did that paranoid Russian thing of acting like anyone could be listening so he better toe the party line. "You can't believe what you see in the media" (agreed) "Ukraine have been provoking and killing Russians for long time" (dunno)

I had my younger son with me and he wanted lunch so didn't get into it with this guy but I left it by saying (only half joking) that I hope Putin doesn't keep pushing West and we have Russian tanks rolling in here in a few months. The guy genuinely belly laughed out loud and said "Putin is ruthless but he's not crazy. Or stupid." That kind of made me feel better.

This is what I think is happening:

-We don't care about Ukraine, never did.
-Russia was made aware the US was drawing down its presence in the globe years before NATO left Afghanistan.
-Putin always knew he had the upper hand in Ukraine, so its no big loss for the West if he secures it, the whole country for himself
-Empowered Russia (USSR2.0 but not really) will eventually be at Europe's backdoor
-Europe who was making ALL THAT FUSS about going its own way since the Obama days and culminating with Brexit etc will feel insecure again, and require US protection, again.

Win-Win for the big boys (USA and Russia).

US State dep't saves face and isn't made to demonstrate how weak its become, and have the EU BEG it to remain.
Russia regains some breathing space.

In World Wars, the USA and Russia don't fight. It's the big boys against a 3rd prey (usually continental European...but will eventually be the Chinks sometime soon).

What does the US gain from a scarier, bigger Russia?

EU scared out their ass...and not trusting Russia. But a weak Russia the Germans French etc would feel comfortable 'collabing' with and maybe at the expense of the Americans.

So yeah, if Russia kept getting encroached upon, and weakened as it was, it would eventually get in bed with the EU or the EU with it and see themselves as more than energy consumers/suppliers. With the Chinese funding silk-road. That would basically cut the US from the old world forever.

But Russia slightly, ever so slightly puffed up...will serve the US in the long term, more than the 'weakened Russia' scenario I wrote above.

And all the proof you need for it is Joe Biden basically got it right about the Russian invasion. To be fair, betting on US Intel in 21st c. is like going to a Globetrotters game and betting on the Generals. So I really didn't think Putin was gonna invade. But the fact he did and Biden called it and got the timing right, tells me they agreed on this for the reasons stated above.

These retards believe anything russian state media feeds them. They literally believe that ukranians are SS soldiers who were brought back to life and are eating russian babies in Donetsk. The state of brainwashing in russia is insane, north-korea tier pretty much.

Not saying that there isnt propaganda in west obviously.

Yeah. What I didn't mention is that, although we don't know each other well and don't hang out or anything, we have a friendly neighbourly "hi, how you doing" relaxed kind of dynamic. As soon as I brought up this Ukraine shit today he stiffened and his comments seemed a bit robotic and tense. Like when woke types start spouting their nonsense. You can tell they mostly don't believe it deep down because it's said without conviction and sounds learned or rehearsed. He kind of sounded like that a bit.
