Romance is primarily a male emotion, a by-product of chivalry and knightly courtship, and something that didn't really catch on as a concept in the West (it never really has anywhere else to this day, at least not in the way we think of it) until Petrarch kicked off the Renaissance.

Women are far more mercenary in these matters and always have been. In many ways they have to be. They have a short shelf life, are more physically vulnerable etc etc. Throw 3 kids into the mix and all bets are off. Hell, a lot of men would get remarried quickly in that situation.

I did that with my dad’s belongings recently, he had all these old movies released on blu ray which I thought were boring and gay but now I’m so happy I’ve got them.

This new schmuck likely doesn’t realise he’s just as worthless and unimportant to her as the last guy who paid all her bills and provided for her kids. He probably thinks he’s met a “good one” who finally understands him etc.

There is no such thing as the love we see in movies and stuff. Even that video of the Syrian refugee stabbing those kids the other day, the babies parents aren’t particularly fervent in protecting them and putting themselves at risk. You can see the self preservation kick in even in that scenario.
