The amount of people who don’t understand just making a doctors appointment is astounding. Why would you go the ER for a non emergency? Unless your fucking leg is cut off you’re probably fine. There’s only a few health insurance companies in the country because the government protects them. You want a solution? Tell the government to stay out of everything.

Medicare has been in the red since it's third year in existence. It didn't take long for doctors to realize they could bill the government endlessly for old people with failing memories. They either don't remember how many visits they had or they don't understand why they need useless surgeries. An eye doctor told me about how she was an expert witness in a trial for another eye doctor who had been scheduling endless surgeries for old people. It wasn't quite surgery for pink eye but it was just as wasteful. This was just one guy who stole 10 million dollars.

Healthcare spending is ~20% of GDP and growing and the industry employs and is served by a shitton of US workers. Reducing medical costs seems technically doable in a vacuum, but no politician will want to be the face of crashing that down to normal (e.g. to 6% of GDP) because that means a big chunk of GDP has to disappear and the disruption is too large.

If the existing scam gets more substantially integrated into govt spending and the trend of rising medical costs has to stay, I'm curious to see how the medical lobbyists who write the laws will fuck over the same class of people again. They've had years to mull it over, but they'll probably just paper over the status quo - prioritize "underserved communities" to the point where normal people rarely get to benefit and have to pay for healthcare again separately.

This is a critique of insurance in general, not a critique of public health insurance. Health care costs follow the 20/80 rule. 20% is responsible for 80% of the costs. The top 1% is about 30% of all costs.

Some insurances, like fire insurance, are even more extreme.

Medicare has been in the red since it's third year in existence.

Only about 15% of Medicare is financed with premiums I.E. insurance payments. No insurance scheme, public or private, can ever work for this pool. Most of the money has to come from somewhere else.

Health insurance is a pretty basic collective action problem. In the end, a pool of 'every citizen, no exceptions' makes the most sense unless you really want to start killing or abandoning sick people.

It didn't take long for doctors to realize they could bill the government endlessly for old people with failing memories.

They can't as your own example shows. But this is actually an argument for fully socialized health care. In the meantime look up 'capitated prepayment'.
