I’m wondering if some of his “software test engineer” positions actually mean he was a video game tester. Years ago I had two roommates in LA that did this and was just playing video games and marking any mistakes. Sounds fun but pays shit. Would also explain the contract work / NDA since you’re usually on by a per project length of time and have to sign NDA’s related to the game.

"Software Test Engineers" usually write scripts that automate the functions that the real engineers develop. So whenever any changes are made to an app, these scripts run to make sure the new changes didn't break anything. Most normal companies require their devs to write their own tests, but huge companies like Microsoft have dedicated "test engineer" positions. It is widely known as a bottom of the barrel dead end career in the field of software. The people who initially take these jobs are typically new graduates who are having difficulties landing their first job, so they take a job like this in the hopes of using it to leapfrog into an actual developer position. The pay is usually shit, and anyone who makes a full career out of it is extremely inept.
