Don't know for sure but he was a heavy smoker so probably lung? Other smoker cancers like throat, mouth or esophageal would have left noticeable symptoms and pancreatic (another one that a lot of smokers get) is quick and he was sick for 9 years apparently. Lung seems the most likely.
