True detective season 1 thread

First six episodes are amazing. The entire mystery. The atmosphere. The dialog. The last two episodes were horrible. They ruin the mystery by having it be nothing more than single serial killer with minor connections to any grander conspiracy. The atmosphere goes from surreal horror to basically hillbilly comedy as the main killer is like the 'squeal boy' rapist from Deliverance. And the dialog was so bad in the last two episodes that fans immediate noticed something was off and accusations of plagiarism were presented that to this day HBO has tried to avoid.

I believe that the first season of this show was stolen from another writer including all of the dialog of Rust. Clearly entire sections of dialog are stolen from Thomas Ligotti novels practically verbatim. And the way that they catch the serial killer.....with green house paint....was beyond ridiculous that only complete apologists would defend it.

Season two was mediocre and contains some horrendously dumb characters that are horror movie female level suicidal. And the third season had the same problem as the first where it presented this huge elaborate story then imploded in the final episode into nothing.

I would say overrated. But the plagiarism in the first season is a joke. The entire atmosphere and dialog were straight up stolen from Thomas Ligotti who should be the sole credited writer and producer on the entire project. Once you know that the show is just ripped off material and how mediocre the ending was it becomes tiresome to watch.

The Sopranos doing homages to Goodfellas constantly was fine because David Chase was always honest about how Scorsese was such a huge influence on him. Imagine David Chase after Sopranos telling audiences that he had never even heard of Casino or Goodfellas and that he was barely familiar with those movies. That is how the writer of True Detective, Nick Pizz, tried to pass off the plagiarism accusations.

It was good up until the finale which had an underwhelming ending.

Season 2 was so bad I didn't even bother to finish it. Haven't even bothered to watch 3

Godfather 3 was a good movie (save Sofia Coppola's performance), and Season 2 and 3 of True Detective weren't bad either
S2 is better than it’s reputation, but it’s a huge letdown after S1.

Just like John Carpenter and Halloween originally being planned as an anthology series, Season 1 of TD was so good and so iconic you simply can’t do an anthology.

If s2 was a totally different show it would have been received differently.

S3 was pretty decent, perhaps objectively better than S2 yet I find S2 more interesting for all of its nonsense.

Was pretty much about to say this exact thing. S2 is actually a good show if it didn’t have the precedent set by season 1. They left S1 fairly open ended enough to keep the plot going. It was just a different show. S3 was more related to S1. If they removed the plot points connecting it to season 1, it would have made more sense connecting the entire series. It would have made it more of a series that explores the topic of government corruption and involvement in sex trafficking. Instead it got kind of blurred.

The thing with season two is that the entire show centers around all protagonists dying. And the protagonists struggling with children. Which were the main two themes of the show. That basically everyone in this season would die. And that their deaths would be related to them having or wanting children. All of the other stuff like political corruption, sex trafficking, the murder cases, are all secondary. The main focus of the story is about thematic protagonists who are struggling with children in their life and are going to die.

So Ray dies in the shootout and leaves behind two sons. One of them may or may not be his. And his children grow up separately. With one thinking that Ray died a corrupt cop. And the other knowing that Ray was killed trying to expose corruption. Ray was a mediocre father but tried his best despite failing. And his son did respect him before the media reports that he was killed as a fugitive. His son has his badge when he is at recess but the true ending is that his son will think his father was a corrupt cop based on the news presenting Ray as some criminal mastermind. Ray starts the show divorced but gets a new girlfriend and get her pregnant by the end.

Frank dies in the desert. Leaving behind no children. He and his wife struggle to make children the entire show and he dies not having conceived one with his wife. He dies because he refuses to leave with her stays on his own. She decides to keep fighting for her husband after his death and teams up with Ani and helps keep them in hiding. Frank starts the show married and dies married.

Paul the gay soldier dies and is secretly a fag. And also a war criminal. And hates his mother and his girlfriend. But after he dies his entire image is controlled and rehabilitated by the CIA and police. And they report that he was a war hero, straight man, proud husband and father, and his mother loved him and shows up when they dedicate a highway to him. His entire legacy is a lie but he does have a son that he leaves behind who will always be proud of his father. Paul starts the show married but his way to divorce but dies still married.

The problem with season two is that the characters behave too stupidly. Their deaths were too predictable because they were behaving like total idiots and you knew that they would all die. And the mystery was not something the writers cared about. It was all about making some thematic story about children and marriage with the political corruption used as a backdrop.
