He's 55 so even if he was contributing $2,000/year starting at age 25 (5% contribution, 50% employer match, regular 3% raises, and 6% return--so basic, low level stuff), by now he'd have almost $250,000.He probably thinks any amount in a 401k is “healthy” - he really thought that was some huge brag like nobody here has careers that pay well.
But he's childless. He should have been contributing $10,000/year at a minimum for the last 15 or so years. Realistically a childless "smart" man in his 50s would be contributing the max each year ($23,000 last year). Dude should be a millionaire with even decent contributions because he's 55 and has three decades of growth. But even on a broke ass plan described above, he should have a good chunk of money. Knowing this retard, though, he has less than $100k.
