This is going to sound womanly. I don't carry a knife. I carry pepper spray. It's technically illegal but when cops busted me with it I lied and said my neighbors have a dog that's out of control. I've used it once. On my self. To test if it works. It was not a good evening.

Knife laws in Canada are insanely lenient, too. Every time I've been questioned by a cop and they ask if I have a weapon I just say "No, but I carry a knife." and hand it over. My knives all flick open with a switch and everything and they always give it back when we're done, usually without even mentioning it.

My ex basically had her life ruined because she pepper sprayed a guy who was literally on the verge of beating her to death. She called the cops and they charged her and she had to start a new career.

While I'm on the topic - there's no length restrictions for blades either. You just can't conceal it which is why knives have clips on them. As long as it's not loose in your pocket it's all good. Basically you could carry a machete down the street in your hand and as long as you don't menace anybody it's not a crime.

I don't mean to give the impression that the cops wouldn't stop and ask you what you were doing but if you're chill about it they can't do anything. Basically a large part of the definition of "weapon" comes down to intent. If you're carrying a baseball bat home from the park - legal. If you decide to try to brain somebody on the way home you've committed assault with a deadly weapon. I don't think they'd even differentiate between a bat and a knife in that situation because the intent is what makes it a deadly weapon.
