You'd be surprised how much software still uses apache2. Maybe you're thinking of apache1. LAMP stack is still pretty ubiquitous with CMS software. Wordpress is likely set up like that on shared servers and wordpress has a massive market share.
Nowadays shared hosting providers that are worth anything use LiteSpeed. Most of the ones still using Apache are shit.
