Their legal team has not inspired much confidence. They seem more concerned with making everything private than presenting a coherent argument why they shouldn't have to pay Patrick hundreds of thousands of dollars for threatening to kick down his door.
There's some legal phrase in latin that basically means "the judge has to try the case as argued", and right now the Making a Murderer legal team has presented a much better case than the city. It's those same rubes in the city that are in charge of pulling the handbrake and giving Rick $500k.
The best time to settle would be now, and his lawyers, Niki, Lynne, everyone knows this could fall apart in trial thanks to Patrick's buffoonery.

They're working to keep things anonymized because they worry that they will not be able to retain witnesses if the witnesses are worried about their personal information being used just for their being involved with the case. If they don't incentivize their own witnesses testimony then they will not be able to make their case.
