Without a shred of irony, he tried to claim it was Watergate 2.0. The Republican Party broke into his residence to specifically steal his joke book, as his open-mic comedy was convincing too many undecided voters to be anti-Trump. The top names in the party understood his importance and authorized this break-in for the greater good.
