When I was involved in this stuff in college and the successive couple years, all the "car guys" would at least go to hardpark meets minimum to just shoot the shit about their cars they never drive and what they put into them. The actual car guys would be doing multiple driving meets a week at their local mountain roads with larger meets taking place every few months. You were only a degree or two separated from any given car hobbyist in the region if you went to these things somewhat regularly. If Patrick was actually involved with anything other than driving to the bar and back, he would have a decent network of car and driving enthusiasts. Even in a shitty flat Midwest state.
