Hmm, my kind of thread.

I've been shit on for disliking Altman's The Long Goodbye, but seriously, it doesn't work for me. Don't get me wrong, it has its moments - and anyone who's seen it knows the moments that stand out - but it feels lackadaisical at times, muddy visuals, and in moments, the oddest cinematography. I love the character of Phillip Marlowe, going all the way back to Dick Powell and Bogart (James Garner not so much, but big props to old-ass Robert Mitchum), but I think my biggest issue is Elliot Gould. I never bought him as Marlowe.

Godfather 1 & 2 are good, but feel so full of themselves. Something about the Director Revolution of the 70's makes a lot of those films retroactively feel up their own ass, like an artificial seriousness glazed over it and beating you over the head that "This is heavy maaaaaan, and if you don't see it, you're just not smart!" No, you're just not my kind of movie most of the time, asshole. I could name several and I know each one would piss someone here off, so I'll leave it as the biggest offender.

Anyone who wants to call a Marvel film "art" can get curb stomped by Ed Norton. They are purely disposable, like everything Disney makes - even before Disney bought them, it was obvious. The only minor exception I'll give you is "Winter Soldier", and that exception is still tenuous at best.

I have to second Star Wars here. I don't get how people take it so seriously when it's pure mindlessness. For all it ripped off from Kurosawa, and bloody hell, did it ever - "It's like 'The Hidden Fortress'... In SPACE!" - it took none of his cleverness, depth or heart. The people who live and die over that property should starve in a Soviet bread line.

AndI know it's blasphemy, but I can't stand Ben Hur. Just can never get through it.

Pat. And his fucking ilk.

Even here in Poland, there's people that go on about it. Mal and I are very friendly when we go for walks in the park, and we see people we know all the time. There's one friend of hers, she's a store clerk, lovely lady, but she always asks me if I've seen the latest Marvel film and I hold my tongue. I have nothing in common with her, but she knows I love movies - and the only ones she sees are modern big budget blockbusters.

I once threw the lass a bone and asked if she had ever seen The Ten Commandments, as she is a frequent churchgoer. You'd have thought I asked her to give me her great grandmother's life story, she told me she never even knew it was a movie. Then she spent five minutes telling us how great Black Widow was.

I hate people sometimes.

Bohemian Rhapsody. I am a huge Queen fan, and this idiot movie was 90% fiction, even going so far as to fuck up chronology just to elicit feels from the audience. Fuck that moronic title as well. This movie should have been called The Show Must Go On if we're doing Queen song titles, or Mr. Bad Guy or The Great Pretender if you are doing Freddie Mercury song titles.

Fuck that movie. Idiot movie for idiot people.

I just watched Rain Man for the first time and half the movie is Tom Cruise talking to a retard like a normal person. "What do you mean you can't fly a plane without screaming?"

Did people have 0 clue what an autistic guy was? It's horrible written
As a parent of a child with Autism Hoffman nailed it. Tom Cruise seemed like a dude dealing with autism for the first time

Here's a chin-scratcher: has there ever been a single decent superhero movie?

I don't mean taking into account nostalgia - you watched the first Superman or Batman as a kid.

I mean a genuinely decent superhero movie.

I dunno. The 78 Superman still holds up all right, as does the Raimi Spider-Man. Your mileage may vary, and it's not like I watch them frequently or anything.

I will say that this only makes the list because the end is horrible. By the end I mean literally the last ten seconds of the movie. The movie itself is great, amazingly shot, great acting, Kim Novak is hot as fuck. But the end is horrible, it's like they were coming up on a hard out at the top of the hour and had to end it.

I’ve been on a string of knocking out a bunch of “great” movies that everyone loves but as an older millennial I have never seen. My top pick so far since I just watched it tonight:

Almost Famous

View attachment 15362

Cameron Crowe can suck a dick. This is the opposite of Oscar baiting. A movie made specifically for a bunch of 50 year olds remembering their youth and “rock”. It’s like a shitty version of “Dazed and Confussed”. “Superbad” was a more moving coming of age tale.
The extended version going under the name "Untitled" is a blast. I just caught it a month and a half ago and was blown away. It was a pleasure to watch.

'Dazed and Confused' on the other hand, is fucking terrible.

Fucking hell, you're going to make me defend "Winter Soldier".

I hate that I like that movie. I hate the Marvel movies with a passion at this point, but I legit like this one a lot. And it's because it feels like a real fucking movie. The story works. The pacing flows. The fights scenes are even good. And the snark isn't over the top. Evans isn't even that annoying in it. I have to give credit to the screenwriters, and the Russo Bros. - they took what was a throwaway film and made something that entertained me. It felt like a goddamned film.

The rest of them can fuck off. Fuck Shang Chi.

I think 78 SM is better than the sequel when a lot of people think the opposite. All the Raimi films are great, even the shitty 3rd one when you compare it to the shit that came after.

There's a lot of concept art and costumes they had for the prototype black suit and Venom that were far better than what we got.

Everyone who said The Godfather can suck my old ghost cock. What's next? You wanna say Good Burger was overrated too? Salvatore "The Godfather" Tessio was one of my greatest performances. Are you just trying to hurt me? You people mistake cruelty for comedy. Words hurt.
"anal can you edit The Godfather out of your comment, for old times' sake?"

Clockwork Orange. 2001. I think with CO I'm too young to "get it" and how provocative it probably was at the time. I feel the same way about the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I think the 2003 remake is infinitely better in every way. But I was a teenager when that came out. So I bet I'd feel the opposite if I were that age when the original came out. But I revisit the remake pretty often and it holds up. It's so bleak and relentlessly tense from the moment the girl pulls the gun out of her snatch. I really hated how whimsical Alex thought he was in CO raping and drinking milk and treating violence like it was normal. I didn't give a fuck about him or his faggot friends or whatever the fuck it was they were doing. It was just that self indulgent Kubrick horseshit that I'm just too much of a fucking moron to understand, apparently. So be it. I have dumb guy movies I can watch.

They're both based on books, I think Kubrick only changed the last chapter of CO. It really starts to pick up in the second act after he's institutionalized. 2001 is worth it for it's effects.

I understand what you're saying though. The remake to The Hills Have Eyes is miles better than the original. Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 is a lot more fun. Dennis Hopper goes fucking crazy at the end
