At the first sign of danger Joe would throw his hat and vest overboard (because he's stupid) and try to leave with the passengers. How does he think he's going to not have to do this in future contracts? He may not have collateral duties (as funny as it is imagining him swabbing the decks, no he doesn't) but safety drills are mandatory for all crew. You kind of have to be sure in an emergency situation they know what to do
