The context of the joke was a library renting Austin Powers but there was porn inside instead. If you know who Ed Powers is, the joke rules. Norton decided I wasn't worthy of a laugh that day and he made sure it was DOA.
Theres nothing that makes a joke funnier than when you have to explain it…(Yes I know I do this.)

You really do it to yourself sometimes. People bringing up a time you bombed 15 years ago is pathetic. But instead of saying “Yeah that was a shitty joke…15 years ago.” and putting egg on their face, you have to explain how we didn’t get its genius.

I've always defended the joke since day one. Why would I back down now?

Hey @BenDovid I can't DM you on here, add me on twitter at https://twitter.com/GorillaPony You and Dan will give everyone a good laugh, even though hes going to treat you like a person which I don't think is fair.

I'll pass.

No disrespect, but it was a bad joke from day one and never deserved anything but confusion (even if you knew who Ed Powers was (straight men don't know male porn stars, but that shouldn't preclude your target audience)).

The format of the premise was something like, "she wanted doctor evil, and instead she got..." After a few attempts you come in by cheating on the original premise with a new one: "She wanted Austin Powers and instead she got Ed Powers (who?)"

Even if you knew Ed Powers (and obscure joke references are only funny when they're high brow (or at least middle brow) esoterica, e.g. Denis Miller), changing the format to suit your need was bewildering.

Cheers
