Best comedy of all time:
Personal pick - Basketball
General pick - Airplane!

the Zucker brothers can really bring the funny

edit: if animated films are allowed I'll toss in the newer Beavis and Butthead movie, cuz I can't even remember what its about because both times I was laughing too hard to pay attention
BASEketball is great

Could you imagine trying to explain this place to a woman 10 years your junior from a small town in bumblefuck Europe, whose life I've hijacked? Honey, in NY, I used to listen to a comedy show known for cruelty where we terrorize people, some of whom have died, and it's the only thing that makes me laugh.
Reminds me of one of my all time favorite callers. Who said he had a business meeting and some woman said "bouquet of flowers" and this guy burst into laughter uncontrollably. And she asked him why it was funny. And he said that he remembered the "bouquet of seaweed joke about dead Connor Peterson from the Opie and Anthony Radio Show". He just wanted any excuse to "Spread the Virus" and nearly lost his job over it.

Best Allen is the 70s-90s - after that he really starts repeating himself (and some of the films are just terrible). Good ones from memory are Radio Days (top notch Allen, start here), Zelig, Hannah & Her Sister, Deconstructing Harry, Husbands and Wives etc.

I don't know I'd call Annie Hall a straight comedy either (despite anything Hollywood says), it's more a melodramatic comedy - and you've got to be an Allen fan, I think, to really enjoy it. Also the references are of their time - its often beautifully shot and has a great romantic vibe - the ending is great and neatly sums up what it's like to have a rose coloured glasses view of a great relationship but also how its great to at least have lived long enough to have that view.

Actual best comedies - There's something about Mary for one and I'd agree with a lot of the above, Airplane! is brilliant, use to love Cheech & Chong, plenty of others I'd put over Annie Hall.

Cheech & Chong is better in theory than it actually is, because the premise alone is funny but the movies didn't hold up to it.

I'd probably find the Marx Bros. shit funnier. I don't think I've watched one the whole way through, but there were a couple of things that made me laugh:

1) They had some sort of legal firm but they were delinquent, so Groucho was cooking eggs on a hot plate that was in the top drawer of his desk. So a female client comes in and he has to shut it to look professional, and as she's looking upwards explaining her plight, Groucho's waving the smoke away from his desk.

2) Groucho's embracing a woman who dramatically tells him "closer... CLOSER! Hold me closer!" and he says "any closer and I'll be in back of ya"

I don't laugh out loud much, but Tommy Boy is the only one I remember making me chuckle.

0 laughs.

Films funnier than annie hall:

Mr deeds
The nutty professor 2: the klumps
Scary movie 4
Dracula dead and loving it

Comedy movies tend to be specific to a generation and their shelf life is limited, so these lists like to go with what they think of as high art.

But Arthur was made in the same era and is timelessly hilarious.

That's 1 minute with more laughs than Woody Allen's catalog.

One of the funniest things about that was Beavis' active listening. Just a steady stream of low volume "huh... Wow... Well I'll be damned" coming from him while characters would be talking destroyed my ribs.

His late 80s-early 90s films are his zenith.

An American Carol is severely under rated, no idea why though.

I suspect it's faggots who can't take a joke and can't see that Zucker is making fun of the conservative uncle at family gatherings, but since he apparently leans right he is being dead serious.
