How did Artie last so long at Stern?

Artie from 2003-2006 is generally considered to be nearly as good as the best Jackie and Billy West years. He carried Stern into satellite radio by himself essentially. He was the only thing on Stern that was remotely listenable and tolerable.
Billy was barely on the show. “He wanted to get paid?” “Never ever knew that, hoo hoo.”

@Sue Lightning, I don't think you know how bad Howard was the moment Jackie left, up until Artie got the bloody chair.

You had every worthless cunt from Craig Gass, to one fucker I don't even remember the name of, to Craig Fitzsimmons, all the way to AJ MOTHER-FUCKING BENZA - and believe it or not, AJ would've gotten the chair if not for his fight with Stuttering John that made Tom fire him.

Artie was leagues above that rubbish - but still couldn't compare to Jackie, especially as a writer. Where Artie could make it up, and he certainly did, was talking a good game. He had decent timing and added to the show, and once he was entrenched, he was the ONLY person - short of Robin - who could call out Howard for his bad taste or hypocrisy without an all out attack back at him. That's not something even Fred completely has to this day.

I think he suckered Howard into a friendship, and Howard, thinking he finally had a manly buddy, protected the guy because it made him feel better. And also, it made Howard's job easier, he had someone else that could fill air and give him a reprieve, as well as do the one thing he loved most for time filling: create conflict.

Artie is an addict, always will be, but I'm glad he's finally on the straight and narrow. I never thought it would happen. The lad deserves a break for his last years, even if he did leave a lot of Hellfire in his wake. And I feel for his poor mother.

But yeah, everyone knew he was a mess, and even though I knew from years after when I started listening to that era, you could clearly hear it. But it was better than nothing at the time.

Can't compete with the Golden Era of the 90's, though. And I'll defend that stupid drunk Jackie Martling until I die.

Before the opioid epidemic, far fewer people recognized addiction. There were whispers on the Stern Fan Network that he was using heroin, but it wasn’t obvious until he started frequently calling in sick and nodding off in the studio. I’ll have to relisten to the Artie years at some point with hindsight.

Fred is and always was a pussy. Remember when Stern brought some guy in to make out with Fred’s wife (from that dumb play) and he was mad at the guy instead of Howard?

I do, but Fred was the only other one responsible for quality writing on that show for nearly the entire run, and unlike Jackie, he never sought credit.

Still a pussy and a kiss ass, but a necessity for that show.

People love to cheer for a John Belushi, which is exactly the archetype Artie was playing.

They’re miserable to be around but from a distance they can be very appealing. That’s all it was. The dude was actually funny for a while and he brought a certain level of drama and excitement with his off-air exploits until the wheels fell off.

It’s a very gen-x thing, so of course the resident zoomer doesn’t get it.

Fred only loved Artie because he hated Jackie. Jackie negotiating himself into being the head writer was a good bit.
Edit: check out all of AQP episodes with Jackie if you have some extra time. It’s cool to hear them talk about having the same job.

Fred's hatred of Jackie was unhealthy. Jackie just negotiated what benefited him without using Ohlmeyer, whom the three used for themselves. So Jackie was always odd man out.

honestly Artie wasn’t that good on the stern show. He was overbearing

There's a LOT of shows where he was. While I liked him, there are plenty of episodes I couldn't stand him.

I get the feeling he was our white Patrice. This is what he'd have been like if he was on the show every day.

I don’t like Fred at all so I’m biased. I don’t understand why anyone calls him a genius for playing fart noises but your point about the writing is well taken. You ever listen to the podcast with Billy, John, and Jackie? It’s a really interesting listen:

I did! And came away with the following:

- Billy holds no real grudges but calls out Tom Chiausano - and rightfully so. Also things worked out better for him leaving anyway, which I'm sure eats at the Pelican.

- Jackie has some regret but looks back at that time fondly and (mostly) honestly. He seems happy and let a lot of the anger go.

- John is a bitter drunken cunt and doesn't even hide it. He tries baiting both into some pettiness, and Billy and Jackie don't really bite.

Shortened, John is a fucking loser and always has been.

Howard telling Billy that Stern is the only reason that he gets voice work aged so poorly. Obviously Billy is extremely intelligent. I like that he’s smart enough to hide his disdain for Howard and looks back fondly. His quote about never wanting to go backwards really resonated with me. The only person he ever spoke poorly about was Ralph. John is very dumb but he’s a top 3 character on the show for sure. The master of deflection haha.

I don't think he actually hates Howard, if he did he wouldn't have done that spotlight show, or the Jackie Puppet bit for the final show that never aired until Sirius. Feels sorry for him, maybe. And that not wanting to go backwards comment was definitely directed at Howard. The Ralph comment, well... Who didn't hate Ralph?

Top character or not, I hate John. True hate.
