I'd vote for an electric guitar to start with. Just bought my father one of those Squier Stratocaster kits last week - solid guitar for the $ , just needed to deal with the fret sprout.

Honestly if you're just learning don't bother going high end. Grab an epiphone or a Yamaha and have fun. I'd start with acoustic to get the hand strength up. Once you're solid on it playing an electric is a breeze

It depends how okay you are with tearing up your fingers quickly. Electric is way easier on your hands. But if you're okay with having a little pain than go ahead with an acoustic. You already play bass so your muscles should be good on that side but the smaller strings will get you a little bit.

I'd recommend an Art and Lutherie acoustic. Made in Canada. I think mine is spruce but I don't have it in front of me. Cost effective, play and sound great. Been beating the hell out of one for 20 years and it stays my favorite acoustic that I always come back to and use to record. Should be able to get an old one for under $500.

On the topic of electrics (same boat... bass>guitar) anyone know if there really is a big difference between player and performer strats? Want something good enough to learn on / fuck with / keep around (trying not to buy twice). Also not trying to just go weird and get a baritone/VI.

There isn't a whole lot of difference, from what I know, between players / performers, depending the year made of course. If you feel comfortable spending the money get the performer as having the made in USA can be comforting if that matters to you. I have a MIM players and it is a solid guitar but knowing it isn't an USA can be irking at times.

People will say "The difference is that USA Fenders are built by Mexicans in California, while Mexican Fenders are built by Mexicans in Mexico. " - That is true and it isn't true.

On the Players, the body size / shape should be the same, tho it might not be.. Players will have less color options, bridge saddles might not be the same metal. The Players should hold its value better, only losing a few hundred on the used market compared to the performer.

Do you want the 2 point bridge or the 6 screw vintage bridge?

Also the more you spend, the less you might want to hold the thing. If I scratched the strat I would be heartbroken, if I scratch the oscar schmidt I could care less and would even pick at the paint to expose more wood.

Been playing bass for about 15 years. I wanna learn rhythm guitar, would an electric better ? I won’t go higher than $700.

What is a good brand ? I don’t want a chink knockoff.
Get a Yamaha acoustic for $150 new. Save the extra 500 for the guitar you really need 5 years from now. The Yamahas sound pretty good and if you mic it you can use it anywhere.

If you choose electric go and want to go under 700 go Ibanez. Okay sound. Built fucking indestructible.

I have had bad luck with ordering Ibanez guitars through the mail, had to send 2 back. Tho those Ibanez GIOs guitars are a hell of a deal for $2-300.

re: the bridge - whatever is easy for a moron to maintain and stays in tune. I have no clue.

Looks/condition don't matter as much as I'd just go to Reverb. Heck, my current fave is a Jazz Special that is all kinds of pitted.

I only owned the lower end 5 string bass that I dropped on the floor like a billion times and it still stayed in tune for like 6-9 months at a time.
I have a beaten 79 Musician (bass) that I've had since forever. The knobs have disintegrated, it's got scars, I've lost the truss rod cover, and the strings are like 25 years old. It's a giant, through-neck and it sounds and feels (other than weight) great. I wonder if it's a sin or a favor to bring it to someone talented to just go wacky on it and give it a glow-up.

We're going to need Guitarzan to get on the case.

The 2 point is modern and isn't how the earlier stratocasters were made but it should be more precise and stable, tho nothing beats a locking system.

If you don't mind fore going the vibrato bridge, can always get a hard tail as having to deal with the floating or even a decked bridge will be more of a hassle.

Thanks. So it looks like the player's got the 2-point. Any idea if the fit and finish are within (moderate) spitting distance? I know, diff. assembly lines, diff. QA depts.
