It's a valid criticism. Their most successful time is considered by many to be full of their overall weakest albums (though I strongly defend Duke, and like the self-titled Shapes), at least in terms of depth. I don't agree with that but it's an opinion you have a right to.

To me, their best overall albums were during the Progressive Rock period up to Wind and Wuthering, with great songs littered throughout the pop output. I find it a shame that Lamb and Selling England couldn't have been their true breakout period, but those were Peter Gabriel's tree, and that didn't really come until Phil took the stick.

Still, even then, it took three albums with him to start getting the mainstream success they desired.

That made me really hate them for just how large their egos are to believe every Apple user would be thrilled to have their new album which was really shitty, I don’t think they even play any songs from that album live anymore. Not even their fans liked it! I’m glad it went down as one of worst ideas / blunders in music history.

I must be the only one that doesn't think that that was that bad of an idea...Itunes was still a new thing to a lot of people and you didn't have to keep it. If it was The Automic Bomb album everyone would have been stoked.

I never understood why people liked Sammy Hagar-era Van Halen. It was so obviously inferior and gay, yet they still sold a fuck ton of records. Hagar seems like a decent enough guy, but he stinks.

Montrose was good and some solo shit is like, okay, but yeah Van Hagar blows and he's a fag for not doing some sort of tribute to EVH. Insignificant ass Taylor Hawkins got two huge tributes and an actual important guy nothing? Just because DLR is hard to deal with? No shit, he's allowed to be, he's BETTER THAN YOU. Late 70's through early 80's Dave trainwreck era was a totally different band than the Hagar years and a lot of fun to watch. The US Fest tapes are hilarious. I'm a Dave era fan but I can't shit on Hagar for being able to perform coherently and consistently during his time.

Love the US fest...there's like 10 minutes between every song with Dave standing there grinning like a coked up freak talking gibberish. I have a buddy that was there and was like "yeah we started leaving during their set." Me being half his age was like "dude that shit is hilarious history you bailed on"

Sammy Hagar is "generic rock singer" personified. He has his template, and it works for him, but it's dull as shit. DLR was a screeching buffoon and all, but damned if he wasn't entertaining as hell. Hagar has no charisma, no verve, no panache. And his VH songs were all the same, with the gay soaring choruses and fruit keyboard flourishes. It was like soft drink commercial music.

I was in high school when Toxicity came out and I was not a fan of that genre but I loved it. Played it all the time. The kids in my school who were into nu-metal hated it because it wasn't raprock enough, the emo kids hated it becasue it was too aggro, the jam band faggots hated it because "why do songs need words?!!?" and the alternative kids mildly tolerated it. Then when one hot girl fell in love with it and all of a sudden SOAD was super popular.

A couple of years ago I tried listening to it and the double bass drum just sounds so muddy. The lyrics are also super cringey when they get political, not as bad as Rage Against the Machine but still bad.

A few songs, mostly the title track, and Aerials still hold up but everything after that album was garbage. I guess the drummer is a huge Trumper now so that got a bunch of millennials butthurt.

Rick Rubin has done alot for music, but as a producer he fucking stinks. Blood Sugar Sex Magic was the last good one he got his meaty fists on

I hated Bitter Sweet Symphony so I hated Verve during that time but looking back now The Verve is much better live and way more talented than Oasis. They are barely comparable when it come to live performing. I still like classic Oasis but The Verve is on a different level.
