It's not so much that it's really new, it's that it was so unsuccessful in all testing before it was determined that it was completely fine to start giving to humans because a few people in poor health were dying. In some miracle, what was only effective 35-45% of the time in animals up until 2019 now was suddenly 99% effective in humans in 2020, and you're not allowed to question it or else you're a right-wing, Nazi, sexist, rapist, homophobic, ableist (or whatever the fuck), pedophile for some bizarre reason. Keep in mind, mRNA vaccines never made it to human trials because of how useless it was. Companies like Microsoft and Google have been pushing development of mRNA since at least the early 2010's because they wanted to start inoculating their employees for the common cold so they'd be less likely to call out and collect sick pay.
