CC, you ever visit Bensonhurst? One time my parents came to visit and we went to a local Russian restaurant there. As soon as we entered I realized, uh oh, this is not a regular restaurant. It was clearly a mob hangout.

It was dark because the front curtains were drawn and very little natural light was coming in. There were men quietly sitting at the bar or scattered about at a table or two. Very few people.

The big Russian lady of the establishment came over to us as we stood near the entrance and asked us kind of suspiciously, "You wish to eat?" Apparently they weren't used to having customers walk in. We said yes so she seated us and we ordered. My mother got fish (which came as a whole fish complete with the eyes). I don't remember what I ate but my parents said it was one of the best meals they ever had.

South Brooklyn was always a hike due to traffic, so aside from that brief few years I never was much. Most of my Brooklyn exposure was around the bridges and places to eat or a few bars.
