What makes things pessimistic right now is that we have all these problems domestically and internationally plus the economy is fucked. In the '60s there was the Cold War and a lot of groups getting uppity, but the economy was real strong, so you could feel like the future would be good for you even if the darkies wouldn't stay in their place. The Bush years, as bad as it was, we were all much more on the same page.
