• Not having a car was considered insanely shameful. If you didn't have your own car, your dating options basically dried up. In the 80s it was way more common for families to have a stay-at-home-Mom, and due to this, if you wanted to date, you basically had to have a car. Because it's not like you can go hang out at a girl's house after 5pm, if her Dad catches you there will be hell to pay.
• Being an atheist was super fucking weird, and I didn't know anyone who admitted it, even though most of us were quite ambivalent about religion.
• There were only three or four stores (if that) where it was acceptable to shop. I met a girl when I was 17 and she was 15, and although she was super attractive to me, I remember being super embarrassed to be seen with her in public because... she shopped at Fedmart. (Which became Target.)
• If you still owned cassette tapes, you were peak poor. CDs were a status symbol. People would display them like trophies.
• I didn't get laid until I was 18 and in college; nowadays there's tons of people who are 30 and have never had sex. I'd estimate that half the people I knew in high school were having sex on the regular, that's way different today, I think.

I remember when I was a kid in elementary school (early 90s) if someone was picking on you or hurting you - they told you to stand up for yourself / hit back / etc which is an important part of growing up to learn to stand up for yourself. That’s what I mean, like K-5 (early to mid 90s) teachers would tell the bullied kid to fight back - but by high school for me (early 2000s) you faced suspension or possibly getting expelled and the police called if if you fought back against some asshole being a piece of shit. You not only had to deal with some asshole but being told just “tell on them” which made you not only look like a bitch but made things worse with the guy fucking with you. Really did a number on men never learning how to stand up for themselves and prob why you got young kids all fucked up.

The young people not having sex as much is something ive also heard - I don’t know if it’s because social media and people not actually talking to each other or porn being so easily available on your phone. I’m from the era of trying to watch scrambled porn and getting laid as soon as possible was huge and you pretty much had to lose your virginity before college.
The 40 Year old Virgin came out in 2005 and I feel like that kind movie wouldn’t fly right now.

B4 I moved back to NYC, in my small town in Spain it seemed the boys and girls were allergic to each other. When I'd go there for HS summers there were like all out Roman bacalas. It's rare to even see people in their 20s PDAing in NYC. I think you're hypothesis on social media, shame culture, and confused youth is pretty accurate.

I think a lot of it is knowing that you can be accused of rape or sexual harassment and have your life ended. This was years back but I remember reading about a sorority that tried to sue a fraternity because they had a history of partying together and I guess hooking up over the years but every member of the fraternity now refused to ever be alone with any of the girls and only had male-only parties and events. So they tried to sue because they were ruining their college experience or something like that. Or maybe they just whined to the press, I don't remember.
