You nailed it. I'll admit I saw both parts in the theater, but I was also a teen who just thought it was cool to see a rated R movie without adults.
I remember going to my friend's house years later and his cousins hadn't seen it, so everyone was gathered around watching the DVD; I walked in where that classic siren noise plays and the camera shows close-ups of the characters. It made me cringe and I told them I couldn't watch it with them, so I went to a different room and played the newly released Oblivion instead.
