90% of the conferences I've ever been to were a complete waste of time outside of some small networking opportunities. Even then, I've never kept in touch with anyone I met at a conference.

Most of the speakers are mediocre and the topics are too high-level to be practically applied to my work. I usually listen to two speakers before I volunteer to sit at our company's booth for the rest of the week.

I cannot imagine how useless a science fiction conference is.
