I don't know though, Russia was supplying the rebels in the Donbass, and that land was Ukrainian based on territorial agreements that the Russians accepted. I'm not sure it can be said they're totally blameless. The main issue really is the missile defense system NATO were surrounding Russia with. When they protested against it, NATO said it was to protect them from Iran, which is laughable. Having that in Ukraine, which is what NATO membership would mean, was in my opinion the main reason for the whole thing. The Donbass rebellion was just a convenient excuse. I understand why Russia did it, and ultimately, they're in the right.

It’s not about them being totally in the right, I’m just talking practically - if Russia started building bases on our borders with Canada and Mexico, and inviting them to join an enemy alliance, would we allow that to happen?

The history isn’t clear cut, either. The US backed coup in 2014 of Ukraine, the clear escalation of destroying red lines by the US and the repeated refusal to engage with Russia joining NATO since 2000.

There’s also a lot of historical context. Brits and the rest or Europe had a hard on for Germany post WWI. Before Germany invaded Poland it had invaded two other countries and were explicitly warned by the Brits not to take more. Hitler tried calling their bluff like a fucking idiot and - Oops! It wasn’t a bluff and now war is declared.

Russia was also essentially an ally considering they helped the allied powers win WWI. We gave more scrutiny to Germany invading a country than Russia. Not sure what the big conspiracy is.
