Erivo's musical chops can't be denied. However, in terms of this show she's a light mezzo or lyric sop (her top is a D6 and she lives in the 5th 8ve) depending on your classification, who for JCSS would need to sing a pained angsty tenor role (on the side of high/counter, granted, but still). A darker, deeper dramatic mezzo with more going on in the 4th might have been a more interesting and preferable voice to cast.

I think Cynthia might have been better cast in the roles of Simon Zealotes or Mary Magdalene, I would have enjoyed that. MM has already been played on film & screen by a WOC--but that doesn't hack attention and grab headlines, does it?
