What storylines and plot points do you think are taken from GoT? I'm not getting that at all.

I mean when Tula Harkonnen poisons all the Atreides men at their homoerotic hunting party I couldn't not roll my eyes. It's s so obviously a ripoff of the Red Wedding it actually made me almost quit watching the show. It felt embarrassingly lazy.

And prior to that, murdering the little shithead prince in a ghastly way in the first episode for shock value felt very much like when that old bitch poisons the Lannister kid at his party.

The relationship between Tula and Valya Harkonnen feels like a direct inverse of the two Stark sisters in GOT, and their path to becoming vengeful murdering psychos being driven by the murder their brother is literally the same thing.

The whole origin of the GOT series - the aftermath of Robert's Rebellion which was based on a lie - mirrors the feud between Houses Harkonnen and Atreides being based on a lie.

I'm not a GOT nerd and only started watching that show in season 5 once the dragons were big, and only know what happened throughout the rest of the show from watching short Youtube clips, so I'm not the expert on how it overlaps with Dune. But my sister rattled off like 10 things that they have in common, Tula killing all the Atreides men being the most egregious.

Edit: Oh yeah, Spoilers. Tee hee.

He doesn't really like the IP. He just understands it's a prestige book to brag about having read if you're in the sci-fi community.

I myself have watched it. It's... fine. It's Game of Thrones in space, and I mean that literally. They take whole story lines and plot points directly from GOT to the point where certain major events lose all their intended gravitas because all you're thinking in real time is, "Oh, I remember when this happened in GOT." But it's fine.

If you're someone like me who doesn't have time or patience to limit your tv viewing to only shows you believe hold up to your artistic standards and just want to turn your brain off for an hour and enjoy something once a week or a couple times a month, this is fine. It's expensive. The CGI is fantastic. The acting is good. The set design and costumes are good. It's nice to look at. It almost - almost - captured the visual spectacle of the movies.

The pacing is uneven at times and the plot gets itself confused trying to appease the book-thumping fanatics while keeping things digestible for viewers like me who've only seen the movies. But it's fine. If you're a big TV watcher I would definitely put it on your list. If you're not, then consider if it's worth your time. There's literally nothing on TV right now and it's only 6 episodes so I watched. And it's been fine.
I'm watching too, the dialog is clunky, the emperor is a door mat and every male except the pyro guy is less than to any female on screen.
But like you said, there's nothing else on.

Actually I do have one real problem with the show, and it's the actor who played Ragnar in Vikings. I thought he was cool in the first two episodes and now I'm sick of him. He has no acting range at all, he's just playing Ragnar. If I was the emperor I'd be like enough with the fuckin Manson lamps, we get it, you're crazy. Just stand there and look normal for a minute, would ya please?

I hope they kill him off, he's really starting to bug me.

I don't really agree with any of those being taken from GoT. The Red Wedding killed off a bunch of the main characters that we'd followed for seasons. The Atreides massacre was shown in a flashback for one of the main characters, showing how she killed a bunch of characters that were introduced in that episode. They are incredibly different, not only for how they were executed but also for their purposes in the show.

Same thing with murdering the kid. In GoT, they kill off one of the main characters after four seasons. In this show a main character kills someone that has had 4 minutes of screentime in the very first episode.

It just feels like a really big reach.

Of course, GOT was in it's 3rd season by that point, this show was in it's 3rd episode. Dune feels like a condescend version of GOT trying to speedrun all the major lines and events.

It's one of the main criticisms of this Dune show, is the pacing is all out of whack because they didn't know if they were getting a second season until just very recently. There are many scenes where the dialogue is just clunky exposition trying to tie things together, but others where it feels like points are dragged out for no reason.

Also, in light of last nights episode, Desmond Hart is basically Jon Snow - half Atreides and half Harkonnen - who was sent away as a child to hide his identity for fear of being killed, who later dies but is brought back to life with special powers.

HBO recycled a LOT of ideas for this show and, while I am enjoying it enough to finish it, it feels lazy at times.

I don't think the show is great but I just don't agree with you that they recycle ideas from GoT. It was also clearly made hoping they'd get a second season, there are so many storylines that won't get resolved in the last episode.

Well, many people disagree.

Yeah, but I think it will be more or less tied up. It's not even decided yet if the second season will continue this story line or jump to a new timeline.

I kind of already know how it ends.
We know house Corrino keeps the throne. We know Kieran Atreides can't die because his line has to continue.
He likely escapes with princess Ynez and goes into hiding after she will turn on her father - she was supposed to be next in line for the throne, but we know in the Dune universe later on women can't rule, so whatever she attempts is probably why that rule comes into being.
We know something bad happens on Selusa Secondus because they eventually destroy the planet, the Imperial Court moves to another planet, and the old one becomes a prison and training ground for the Sardukar.
We know the really old sister is working to undermine the Bene Gesserit leadership because she resents the Harkonnen sisters for killing her friend Dorothea. I think she's been poisoning them all with tea spiked with the "fear covid" or whatever that nonsense is, which is how Desmond was able to kill Kasha from the other side of the universe with his mind. She's also been responsible for passing messages along between them and it's pretty obvious to me she's reading them and playing dumb.
One or both Harkonnen sisters will die when Valya realizes Tula lied to her about killing her baby.
I'm pretty sure Sister Jen and Sister Alia take over the sisterhood, Jen is the only main character so far who hasn't had a major impact on the plot.

My only question is whether or not Desmond was enhanced with technology. I feel like they haven't set that up well enough if it's the case, but the only person I know who watches this show and reads the Dune books says the two blue eyes they keep showing is a reference to the AI thing, Omicron, or whatever, which is supposedly in exile. Maybe Desmond secretly wants to bring back AI, I dunno.

It becomes a little predictable when you realize every character in the show is lying literally all the time. You can assume what characters will do just by taking the opposite of what they say they'll do.

The most obvious choice would be that they are the eyes of Leto II.

Oh that makes more sense.
Yes. Okay so Leto II is sending his ancestor Desmond Hart prescience visions from the future? Because he's the sandworm god who can see through space and time and Desmond is of the Atreides/Harkonnen bloodlines...

So the prophecy of the Dune movies, the Kwizzatch Hadderstein or whatever is really the Bene Gesserit trying to make another Desmond Hart who they can control?

That would make sense.
But now we already know how it ends.
Yes this is the correct answer.

I think any time he's made known that he's watching a new series then someone from here texts him spoilers because we're still hilarious, so he's probably consciously not talking about new shows he likes
So he won't stop blabbing when it "endangers" himself or his parents but he'll go radio silent to avoid spoilers? What a piece of shit. Or a lying piece of shit who self swatted.

Hey I was right about almost every single thing except Javicco dies, and neither Harkonnen sister dies.

Again, I feel like the acting and production value GREATLY outpaced the writing in this season, ep 6 was HEAVY exposition in the dialogue. And that is usually a symptom of poor planning, where the writers have to cram events into a limited space because they don't know how long they have to tell the story.

Unfortunately this was greenlit only for one more season at a time, so it will likely be more of the same in S2. But I will watch.

The way they showed the ships bending space in this was absolutely amazing and honestly worth the price of admission watching all 6 episodes. I can't believe this was a TV show - just because of that.

I loved that too. Apparently the pacing was bad because they condensed everything to six episodes because of the strike so I hope next season won't have that problem.
