OK so tell me one comedian who had a happy ending?
Idk if we’re counting TV sketch comedians or comic actors as well as stand-ups, but I’d say the likes of Dan Aykroyd, David Spade, Dana Carvey, Bill Hader, Seth Myers, Andy Samberg et al of those SNL alum classes seem fairly content and happy with life in their older age.
You may not think them funny or any good, but as far as anyone can tell they’re doing well emotionally. There’s still time for that to change, of course.
And I think most successful or well-known British comedians aren’t mired in anger, depression and self-loathing, either. At least not where the public can see. We Brits prefer to project, sublimate and externalise our unhappiness into grumbling about everything and everyone else (one of my old dad’s favourite vague rejoinders: “it’s everyone else [that’s the problem], isn’t it”)
