The main thing is that McD's had been serving coffee at like 190 degrees and had been told to stop by various government entities. The woman suing had 2nd degree burns IIRC because it spilled on her due to the lid not being secured properly. The jury gave a huge punitive damage award because McDonald's had repeatedly been serving coffee at dangerous temperatures. After the lawsuit, to this day, they stopped.

I watched the documentary and I was surprised that I agreed with her. McDonald’s originally rejected an extremely small figure settlement for her medical bills. I think that the final value for the case is still undisclosed.
