I liked Conan but always understood that his humor was a bit too niche for older viewers. Dug when Letterman would get openly annoyed with a guest and just start trashing them.
Of the current late night hosts, everyone shits on Colbert & Corden but Seth Myers' show is the worst fucking thing I've ever seen. It's like Patrick's twitter feed - every joke is Republicans bad and America oppresses marginalized communities. Seth has zero charm or charisma to appeal to Midwestern housewives, stone faced telling joke after joke after joke like he's dishing out North Korean propaganda. But nobody has ever watched his stupid show to validate my opinions how awful it is.

I totally agree with your assessment of Seth Myers. Jimmy Kimmel has also become extremely nasty. I was a fan of Jimmy’s going back to the Win Ben Stein’s Money days.
I think Jay Leno was smart enough to realize that The Tonight Show had to appeal to the widest audience possible. I think that is why he focused on the monologue and having a few key bits; headlines and Jaywalking.
Letterman was awesome the first few years on CBS. I still love when he worked the Taco Bell drive though.

Post-Hugh Grant whore in the car, but before he interviewed him, he was doing his monologue and "cut away" to a news feed of another celebrity caught in a car with a prostitute, "Cops"-style. First out of the car is a woman way too beautiful to be a street walker, and then the celebrity they pull out?
Richard Simmons. And he's screaming "Nooooo!" and freaking out as only a queen like himself could.
It's the one bit I remember clearest from the many I've seen during his Tonight Show run, and the funniest of all of them. Even Conan never had a bit that topped it. I would kill to find that again, my pal just had a "Talk Soup" clip of it.

Which goes against the idea that Leno is some kind of Alpha. An Alpha would've said. "Fuck you" and gone to Fox. Leno is just as much, if not more, of a sniveling "But the Tonight Show's an institution!" homo as Conan.
Not even that great of an institution. I dare any of you shitdicks to make it through 10 minutes of Johnny Carson's Tonight Show.

Leno knew the audience he needed so the humor was broad and like many pointed out wasn’t leaning one way politically. When he was on I thought he was corny but looking back it makes sense since he got the top ratings. I liked Letterman more because of his humor and if he was stuck with a shit guest (Paris Hilton comes to mind) he would give them enough rope to hang themselves. Ferguson was underrated and the kind of late-late show you wanted to see where the host treated it like he was doing whatever he wanted because since it was late the network wouldn’t notice. Conan’s 1230 show was great but his humor was too niche / inside to work on the tonight show.
That being said, late night TV in 2021 is beyond awful. The fact that politicians and CNN / MSNBC hosts are GUESTS show how far they have fallen. Who the fuck wants to watch Brian Stelter or Rachel Maddow as a guest when they barely get ratings for their own shows? “Tonight on Colbert - Senator Corey Booker!” - WHY?!?!?! The only host that isn’t 100% left wing douche is Fallon and he tries to safe like Leno but his act of being super excited for EVERY guest (oh my god! I can’t believe you’re here!) has become obvious and stale. He was known on SNL for being the one to fuck up and laugh in every skit. I’ve heard he’s a big drunk mess off set which makes me like him a little.

Late night talkshows were nothing but propaganda for each network. You could sell the show as basically advertising space for upcoming movies. So some movie pays the network for a slot on late night and sends the lead actor or actress to promote some stupid movie or television show. You basically are just watching commercials with ad breaks in between them. Someone makes a new music album they use the late night shows to promote it. And the networks promote the people that are connected to their own movie studios and record labels.
Now instead of using the network shows to promote movies or other shows. They use it to promote faggotry, race mixing, global warming, pornography, tiktok, or whatever garbage the jews want shoved in our faces. So you have some random influencer whore going on late night to promote NFTs or some other trash.
This is how 99% of podcast guests are. They go onto a show, get softball questions, plug their upcoming gigs or movies or whatever. Rinse repeat. This is why O&A was so unique. Comedians just came in to hang out. And celebrities were often treated like shit. Or celebrities were forced into a real interview with actual questions.
