What went so horribly wrong with Jim Norton’s career?

I agree Chip was the final but also biggest breaker for me - and I was a big Norton fan. Please Be Offended is a brilliant special and his comedy was still top notch as late as that Netflix Deplorables/Degenerates show (I can't remember the name) where he did 20 minutes on serial killers - which is his last taped thing, I think. A lot of his stuff is brilliant - its lack of success in the mainstream comedy world means nothing (I was also a fan of Patrice who also did not have mainstream success). He - Norton - clearly doesn't agree though - never has, he thinks all of it is shit and doesn't understand why he's not more successful like more mainstream (less filthy comics) who do comedy about their wives/kids/family - which Norton had none of (also why he's trying to push his 'relationship' now - too late). I saw my favourite comic go from top notch stuff to nowhere when Ant got fired, to then working with Sam Roberts and telling his original audience to 'go away' (he did do this, live on air on Jim and Sam) and I guess from his own numbers and bawling on livestreams just a few months later that's what the final hangers on did - his audience had enough. But he 'pivoted' all throughout this to Chip - which is a different audience to the one he'd built up for years, he walked away from his established audience and chased the guys who go to things like Dabblecon and think WATP is the height of funny - naturally his actual standup career cmpletely died.
Norton is just a big time hater, and overall piece of shit. It is all well and good to not have a bunch of friends. But too deliberately cut ties, burn bridges for your own personal gains is really fucked up. The only thing is that all those Cellar guys were self absorbed assholes, Jim just was on a popular radio show, so he had more exposure. Really could have taken advantage of his job and made it into something else completely.

O&A always felt like this fragile thing where the second it ended, they'd all become irrelevant almost immediately and that's pretty much what happened. None of them are particularly talented on their own, including Norton. All the best things that happened in his career were as a result of being the third mic on O&A. His career would've been nothing without being on that show.

Burr and Kevin Hart are the main two who made it out of the Cellar and built happy lives, and on youtube clips you see so many assblasted Cumia simps Hating on them for it.

That said I saw Norton live at the Cellar this year. He roasted me and it was almost surreal to me—not gonna pretend I wasn’t being a fanboy.

I mean, tbf, you can say that about most actors, comedians, singers, etc, right? “Their career would’ve been nothing without their biggest success!”

Jimmy is unable to be authentic, plus his pivot to right wing culture war bullshit probably didn’t help if I had to guess.
Did he seriously switch to right wing punditry? Does he have to kill his husband now?
I think he lost a lot of credibility in the NYC comedy scene after he threw Louis under the bus. Also he appears to be a pretty unlikable guy behind the scenes and is probably difficult to work with. Dave Smith has become pretty popular now and they had a pretty big falling out because he was a creep to Dave’s wife. So it seems like he doesn’t have too many friends left.
i have heard a few stories about his personality around younger or unknown comics compared to how he acts around popular ones. He’s a complete asshole one minute then an ass kisser the next. I saw Whitney Cummings get her break on Jim’s hbo show, then never heard either of them mention each other again.

Jim was a trendsetter too early to the tranny party and failed to take advantage of it too late.

I'd say it's the opposite. For as as much as Jim has made it a big a part of his personality, he's been really late to catch up with the culture. He only married one years after gay marriage became legal and transgender women have legal and mainstream acceptance. He would not have dared to do so in the late '90s.

Even when he talked about his fetish, there was a shemale section on any porn site or store.

His problem was that he wanted to be a serious comedian but he’s just an idiot. Do you think dice found him funny? Or pawned him off on ona because he had talent? Jim got opportunities because he was part of a profitable show and executive said to themselves “hey, we like profits too, let’s get one of them”
Management tried to fire him for years. The Opester fought them every time which obviously ended up backfiring on him because Morton is a real backstabber and piece of shit. The faaawkin dopes down the hall were right about that one.

the other problem with his standup, at least in the past 10 years, is that when it isn't self deprecating "I'M A DEGENERATE HAHA" shit it's topical garbage that ages horribly. fuck it's aged horribly by the time he finishes workshopping it and releases it in a special

Not only does his topical humor age badly, but he tends to dwell on events, especially tragedies, for years and years afterwards.

How long did he lean on Teri Schiavo and Scott Peterson long after those stories left the headlines? And he's still obsessing over George Harrison's brain tumor to this day. Who under the age of 30 even knows who that is?

The Louis thing told anyone that Jim has no loyalty and would turn on you in a minute. It's not like he was part of the Andy Kindler/Ian Micheal Black set of comics, which would never accept him anyway.
Loved how he made good and damn sure he was the first one out there to make sure "the right people" noticed, only for not only for nobody else to pipe up, but to vocally defend Louie the entire time.

Norton really motherfucked him, and exposed himself a sssssssssssssssssssscumbag.
