It's less odd when you consider that every comedian of that era that had a brain actively tried to court non-American audiences. The US has a population of around 350 milion, the EU alone is like 730 million. It's just good business sense to try to tap into a bigger market, which is exactly what all the guys that blew up did (CK, Burr, Chappelle, etc.). There's an old show where Burr just came back from touring Europe and Worm is being an obstinate retard as always, with Burr pointing out how many comedy fans there are over dere. On another show, CK expressed frustration with how dumb marketing people and management are. There were millions of people across the world who'd gladly pay some money to watch a special or show, but the American Jews were too stupid to even give them the option, which is why everyone outside of North America just pirated everything instead.
