I don't play a ton of games, mostly just GTA Online and more recently No Man's Sky, but it's always been GTA for me ever since I got GTA 1 in 1998 when I was a kid.

Sad memories, but fond memories, of me coming home from school (I was a latchkey kid from the age of 8) and having the place to myself as my parents did their thing and hung out with their people's. I would just play games to not be sad and alone. Going outside was not the safest when I was a kid because it was at one point a "no go zone" because of issues with gangs and drugs so I would play GTA with my friends (who all became Kings because it was cool to fit in) and would have the time of my life.

Some of that still resonates when I am running around GTA Online all these years later. I think about good friends who I had who just couldn't fucking behave and ended up dead or undesirable to be around because of the risk of getting attacked by someone who doesn't like them. It's still my espace from the assholes in life. I go in my own world where I can do whatever I want.

It's sad I know, but it's the truth.

Video games are fun. But being better than movies or television shows depends on the genre. No sci-fi movie or fantasy movie or book has ever been as good as video games for me. Stuff like Starcraft or Warcraft are simply more fun for me than anything in books or movies. If Mass Effect 3 had an actual good ending it would basically have been the greatest sci-fi story of all time instead of a dead franchise now.

But on the other end things like Godfather or Sopranos are infinitely better than something like GTA:Vice City or whatever. I can watch Donnie Brasco or Casino on a loop over and over. I will get tired of playing GTA after beating the story modes and need a few years between plays.

I haven't played VC since it came out since I got into SA and that was that. I did once in awhile go back to the online in IV since I preferred it over the shit in V, but it's infested with hackers that will just teleport you wherever they want on the map or just instakill you.

The most insignificant thing now is behind a paywall. You can play any fighting game from the 00s that gave you tons of alternate outfits for free while that would be $500 in microtransactions today.

PS2 is still the best system ever produced from it's stable of games.
