Yeah, they were pleasant folk back in the day...prancing and flitting and vigilantly staying in the closet. It's why nobody really whined when they hijacked the term "gay" and adopted it as their identifier. Gay was a legit term for joy/happiness and now it means two guys sodomizing each other.
Nowadays, like you said, they're vengeful and grudge bearing...no wonder the most oft-used terminology for them (at least in certain online communities) is "croag".
