Actually if I remember correctly the original story says he's a peasant from somewhere in China without specifying.
Im speaking about the actual lore...(Alf layl waa layla..."a thousand and one nights" was lore compiled in Baghdad, in Arabic...translated into English as the "Arabian Nights" and introduced the non-arabic world to characters like Aladdin who was Uyghur, Sindbad who was a Sindhi (Pakistani today) living in Basra Iraq, Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves who was Persian, etc etc)
