Howard really is an awful interviewer. He's basically telling Conan he sucks to his face in a very passive aggressive way. I think Conan regretted going on because Conan wasn't getting anything positive out of it. Even so he put Howard on the spot by asking Howard if he'd do his show, which was the right move.
I miss Billy West on the radio.

Billy ruled and I hate serious interviews. Howard is a bad interviewer though. Talks about parents and getting laid. I listened to one with Lauryn Hill on Friday and he ruins the whole interview by “pretending” to hit on her.

What fans? Does he even have a show anymore? Conan was must-watch in the early 2000s. His monologue was okay the cute shit got old, but his bits were usually really good. The thing where he went to Finland used to make The DMAN fawking howl.

Yeah that was kind of his thing. He did get a unique interview out of celebrities back in these times, because he was aggressive with them. Now he plays nice and challenges them on things that he cleared with the PR lady beforehand.

I know -- I listened to Howard for years but after not listening to him it's really jarring. He doesn't directly trash Conan as much as repeating that NBC was going to cancel his show.
Which, for that interview, Howard was 100% wrong about. Looking at Conan's face, I won't say he was confident that his show was going to stay on the air, but he didn't think Howard was right about the cancelation being imminent.

While no one will ever top Craig Ferguson to me, I can't deny no one had better interviews than Dick Cavett. Man was a fucking natural and could talk to anyone without insulting them or his audience. He was the anti-Howard.
And Johnny? Johnny was just fucking cool. I know it's fun to shit on him now, because yeah, off camera he was a miserable cunt, but he had the best guests and amazing rapport with the biggest stars of the day. I still remember seeing the clip of when he walked over to the set of CPO Sharkey to fuck with Don Rickles.
And look, early Conan was really good. Even great at times. He's not like he used to be, but he has moments. The energy is gone.
And I'm insulted at you lads shitting on Letterman, but I like a dry humour. It didn't always land, but when he wanted to be mean, the man was funny. And no one handled a potential cheating scandal better than he did in the history of television.
