I never took to Gervais' version. Cringe humour is the laziest of all, next to constant wordplay (yes that's a jab at Letterkenny).
So years ago, during the pandemic, in between the web performances, Gosia and I tried to watch the American Office, thinking maybe they learned from Gervais' mistakes. Keep in mind, she didn't like his Office either, but we wanted to try something new.
Three seasons. We forced our way through whole seasons, and barring an intermittent chuckle - usually from Dwight - all I was seeing was the bullshit Ricky did with a USA filter over it and cranked to 11. We just kept waiting for it to find a balance, some kind of God damn balance, and it never did. Everyone was so unlikable.
She didn't even make it through the whole third season finale. She was "Fuck this!" after ten minutes. I finished that episode and revoked my privileges to ever pick a series again.
The one that set me off the most? The one where the Pam bitch invites her co workers to her Art show. No one really showed up, and the few that did shit on her work behind her back (but she heard it). The only one who talked her up was Carrell's character, an imbecile but not without a heart. I'm sure fans of that show found it sweet, and it should have been, but how can it be when EVERYONE ON THE SHOW IS A DAFT SELFISH CUNT?
So yeah, I don't know how anyone can call it the funniest thing ever. I'd rather be locked in a Room with The Mighty Boosh on 24/7 and an empty gun to taunt me.
US Office is overrated everywhere else but on this "lol I hate the popular thing too" messageboard it's underrated.
It's strength came from the strongest character development on any sitcom in history. That's why it's so popular with women, it's relatable if you've worked in an office and can match the tropes. Every single cast member is perfect, keep in mind they went after Patrice before he fumbled that opportunity.
